Abstract:  The purpose of this article is to notice the footprints of a publican in the Gospel of Matthew, to answer the question if the money does matter in this Gospel and to remark the ingenuity use of the technical term for a better understanding of the Gospel. To develop this topic I have divided my article in three chapters: 1. Matthew’s position in regard to the tax collectors; 2. The term “money” as it is technically understood in Matthew’s Gospel; 3. The exposure of rules about poverty in Matthew 10. In the first chapter I attempted to point out the image that Matthew has over the tax-collectors by stressing his collecting to Christ and the impressive attitude of the apostle; this is the paradigm of the Matthean apostolate. In the second chapter, I have presented the various terms that Matthew uses for money which denote a very good knowledge of this subject due to his former profession. Finally, in the third chapter, I have attempted to analyze from an exegetical and theological point of view the rules in regard to poverty as it is seen in the tenth chapter of Matthew’s Gospel.

Keywords: tax collectors, money, poverty, apostleship.
