  Article:   ST. GREGORY OF NAZIANZUS AND THE THEOLOGY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. A FEW TERMINOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS.

  Abstract:  The Nicaeo-Constantinopolitan creed expresses the relation between the Holy Spirit and the Father without using the word homoousios and replacing it with the more diplomatic and the less explicit homotimos. This situation occurs in spite of the fact that homoousios has been used before by a council held in Alexandria in 362 (under the presidency of St. Athanasius) and at least in one homily pronounced in Constantinople by St. Gregory of Nazianzus. St. Gregory continues the theology of the Spirit initiated by St. Basil of Caesarea, but he makes a step further and proclaims what Basil hesitated to do, namely expressing the divinity of the Holy Spirit and His equality with the Father and the Son in an ontological language. He also informs us that there were two opposite parties during the council of Constantinople which preferred two different expressions: treis hypostaseis vs. tria prosopa.
