Abstract: The ceremony we are attending is dedicated to awarding the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Babeş-Bolyai University. According to the Charter (2003), the highest academic title of Babeş-Bolyai University is awarded to personalities with top ranking achievements in the fields of science, technology, philosophy, art, literature and theology all over the world, who have supported different activities in our institution.
Faithful to its high achievement standards, Babeş-Bolyai University has awarded this title to a series of outstanding personalities in the fields mentioned, so that we are proud to say that our university club of doctors honoris causa is one of the most distinguished. We are thus honoured to be able to count as part of the history of this university: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, at present Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Walter Kasper, Cardinal Thomas Spidlik, Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski, Cardinal Peter Erdő, Cardinal Josef König, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartolomeu I, René-Samuel Sirat, the Great Rabi of France, Gunther Wenz (München) and other theologians of well-deserved renown; Nobel prize winners such as Richard Ernst (Zürich), George Palade (San Diego), Günter Blobel (New York), Ahmed Zewail (California Institute of Technology) and Jean-Marie Lehn (Collège de France); world famous technologists such as Nam Pyo Suh (KAIST); biologists as Raymond A. Dwek (Oxford) and Franco Pedrotti (Camerino); mathematicians such as Willy Jäger (Heidelberg); the most prestigious historians of the Middle Ages Jacques Le Goff (Paris) and Harald Zimmermann (Tübingen); the creator of cognitive psychology Ulrich Neisser (Atlanta); chemists such as Achim Müller (Bielefeld) and Henry F. Schaefer III (Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry); world famous philosophers such as Paul Ricoeur (Paris), Richard Rorty (Stanford), Manfred Riedel (Erlangen) and Manfred Frank (Tübingen); outstanding sociologists such as Raymond Boudon (Paris) and Georg Weber (Münster); economists as Attila Csikan (Budapest), Mészáros Tamás (Budapest) and Mugur Isărescu (Bucharest); historians as Keith Hitchins (Champaign-Urbana), Carol Iancu (Montpellier) and Glatz Ferenc (Budapest); literary and linguistic theorists such as Jean Starobinski (Geneva), Virgil Nemoianu (Washington, D.C.) and Nicolae Balotă (Nice); the novelist Norman Manea (New York); renowned geographers such as Jean Claude Gall (Strasbourg) and Mario Panizza (Padova); very prestigious political scientists such as Shlomo Avineri (Jerusalem) and Bronislaw Geremeck (Warsaw); Hans Gert Pöttering (Osnabrück), Hervé Hasquin (Bruxelles); key specialists in the history of religions such as Moshe Idel (Jerusalem); personalities of the history after the war; international academic leaders as Theodor Berchem (DAAD – Bonn), Hans van Ginkel (Utrecht), Josep Bricall (Barcelona), Georg Winkler (Vienna), Jan Sadlak (Paris), David Ward (Washington, D.C.) and Vladimir Filippov (People’s Friendship University of Russia); historical personalities such as king Mihai I of Romania; Transylvanian personalities, as Orthodox Archbishop Bartolomeu Anania, Catholic Archbishop Gyorg Jakubinyi, Protestant Pastor Paul Philippi, and many others.
