  Abstract:   The New Interpretation of the Crucifixion Theme as Viewed by the 20th Century’s Painters. The main feature of the 20th century is a multitude of ideas and artistic works. A whole wave of styles and trends develops in an innovative way, some of them having nothing to do with the past century’s values. The artistic vision focuses on two different aspects: the figurative paniting and the abstract painting. Our Saviour’s drama becomes one more time an important and profound theme, as the artist sees both the Divine Christ and the Human Christ. It is important to mention that Maurice Denis and Georges Desvaillères have started an Arte Sacre workshop in Paris back in 1919. Of all the biblical themes used by the artists throughout the century, the Crucifixion is a subject of main importance for the painters: Bacon, Baselitz, Chagall, Corinth, Dali, Denis, Dix, Ensor, Ernst, Gauguin, Grosz, Guttuso, Jawlenski, Matisse, Munch, Nolde, Picasso, Rainer, Saura, Sutherland, Tapiez, etc. The artists have painted Jesus both defeated and glorious. Alongside the religious painting influenced by the western culture stands the post-Byzantine icon, the latter being a characteristic of the Eastern Church.
