  Abstract:  The canonization of Pope Pius IX. The history of the Church was always accompanied by the mysterious and - at the same time - terrible reality of martyrdom, a reality repeatedly announced by Jesus Christ Himself. By imitating its Founder, the Church has always responded positively in times of persecution, thus giving birth to more and more saints. The pontificate of Pope Pius IX - one of the longest pontificates after that of St. Peter the Apostle - made no exception. The process of canonization of Pope Pius IX, an event that owas supposed to cause joy to the entire world, became, throughout its deployment, a true battleground, this battle ending only after the beatification of Pope Pius IX. The canonization process for elevation of Pope Pius IX to the holiness of the altars, is still pending.
