Abstract:  Iosif Papp-Szilágyi’s first sermon as a bishop. Iosif Papp-Szilágyi was appointed bishop by the emperor Franz Joseph I, on the 1st of November 1862 and was confirmed by the Holy Father, the Roman Pontif Pius IX, on the 16th of March, the following year. He was ordained in Blaj, on the 3rd of May and ascended the episcopal throne on the 17th, the same month. His first enthroning sermon is very impressive from many points of view. Truly preoccupied with the life of his Eparchy, he is concerned with every field of religious life in the Greek-Catholic Church of Oradea. His model of leadership is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the divine Shepherd. He orientates his speech towards all Christians whom he sees their children, his herd. The discourse involves priests, teachers, theology students and monarchs. The homily may be understood as a course of oratory. Very attentive to the style and the words he uses, the bishop of Oradea taught and prayed at the same time.
