Abstract:  Toward a Neutral Definition of Secularisation (I) Secularisation is first related to Christianity, which has complex relations both to the previous religions and to the secularised modernity. In the case of the traditional societies religion was involved in all the events of life, the adversity of nature being so strong that survival offered a spiritual meaning as well. This is why this process allows to be interpreted in many different ways - as emancipation of society, thus transcending the social standstills preserved with the help of the Church, or as a regress, the absence of meaning - an absence modernity is no more aware of - being a consequence of the abandonment of spirituality.
