Abstract:  The present study aims to build an empirical typology of political participation and to describe the types resulted. I refer only to those acts which are strongly and directly linked to the political sphere for which the political component was explicitly mentioned in the items in order to narrow down the possibility of different interpretation. The data used for the development of the political participation typology were collected within a survey funded through a CEEX research grant . Data collection within the survey was done face-to-face, using a standardized questionnaire. The sample was representative for the adult population of four communities (urban area: Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca; rural area: Răşinari and Apahida), the total size of the sample was 1,456 citizens. After the factor analysis of the political participatory acts, there resulted three major factors (modes of participation): collective participation, individual participation and voting. Through the cluster analysis of these dimensions, four types of political participation resulted: the non-participants, the traditional participants, the parochial participants, and the active participants, each with a relatively well defined profile.

Keywords:
