Abstract:  This study illustrates the trait analysis technique with an assessment of the leadership style of Ion Iliescu. Scores on three main leadership traits - conceptual complexity, task focus and self-confidence – resulted from a content analysis of eight interviews are used to describe the way in which Ion Iliescu engages the problem definition process and chooses the strategies employed in solving the problems he faces as a leader. According to his scores, Ion Iliescu has remarkably high level of task orientation and moderate levels of conceptual complexity and self-confidence. These results correspond to the profile of a leader who will be mostly guided by accomplishing the tasks that best serve his interests while still being sensitive to situational cues and who has a need to pay attention to information that offers feedback on his own views and actions. The diagnosed leadership profile is identified in several of Ion Iliescu’s political decisions.
