Abstract:  The present article looks at the discourse of the Romanian press during the campaign to enter NATO in 1997. After a brief overview of the literature, the author puts forward four hypotheses: (1) the press did not have its own message; (2) it reproduced the official discourse; (3) it overemphasized the "legendary" and dramatic character of the whole campaign; (4) the press transmitted a false feed-back of the public, much stronger than it was really the case. A broad content analysis on the first three most read Romanian dailies - Evenimentul Zilei, Adevărul and România liberă - confirms the hypotheses, with a certain amount of nuance depending on the newspaper. Moreover, the press seems not to have played even the minimum role of setting the agenda in the matter. Its part was to dramatize the topic via an abuse of symbols and poll figures and to create an impression of stringency and mobilization far beyond the limits of reality. This in turn produced a specific impact both on the public and on the officials, an effect that further pushed the campaign into a mass illusion.
