Abstract:  The article explores the new dangers for national security after the Fall of the Berlin Wall and how the changes in the international system gave birth to a new generation of threats for national states. Threats like international terrorism, organized crime, ecological catastrophes and other like these offer a challenge without precedence for the very existence of the national states in the next century. All of these create extensive vulnerabilities for the states, which have to find new strategies of response. The present structure of the international system, together with the threats that creates and the national policies of response, generates a new environment for the international politics of the next century.
