Abstract:  Synthesized forty years ago, spin labels (nitroxide radicals) represent chemically stable paramagnetic molecules used as the molecular probes for testing structural properties and molecular mobility of different physical, chemical and biological systems, by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The physical basis for nearly all EPR applications is the anisotropy of the nitroxide signal and the sensitivity of the EPR spectra to various relaxation pathways. The interaction between an electron of a spin label and an external magnetic field depends on their relative orientations. The splitting and the center of EPR spectra of an oriented sample are used to determine the orientation of labeled domains. The width of the signal is proportional to the orientational disorder, which is used to measure conformational heterogeneity of environment. The applications of the nitroxide spin labels at interface processes are discussed in this rewievs.
