Abstract:  5Fe2O33Gd2O3 micropowder and 5Fe2O33Gd2O3–dextran nanoparticles were prepared and studied by magnetic susceptibility and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. Magnetic susceptibility data suggest the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions between the magnetic ions ( Fe+3, Fe+2 and Gd+3 ) of the samples. These interactions are stronger for the micropowder sample. The relaxivities are almost the same but the R1 relaxivity of the nanoparticles is higher than that of the micropowder sample. The decrease of the particles size in the 5Fe2O33Gd2O3–dextran to nanometer range determines modifications of their magnetic properties.
