Abstract:  Some general considerations are available from the literature about the stabilities of the electronic units of the time-of-flight mass spectrometers [1]. There are many possible alterations of the voltages and pulses applied to the electrodes of the ion source as well as of the electrostatic mirror and of the postaccelerating electrodes. The possible alterations of the electric parameters were examined and their effect on the mass resolution estimated. A first class of such parameters were those regarding the ion source. First the effect of a deviation from the correct value of the ratio of the extracting voltage to the total acceleration voltage in a space focusing instrument was determined. The influence of the instabilities of the voltage applied to such a reflectron on the instrument resolution was calculated. Based on these results the performances of the instruments were correlated with those of the electronic units. Also some improvements are suggested.
