Abstract:  An open problem in the important research field on the low-frequency dynamics of DNA double helix is related to the direct absorption of microwave energy in DNA polymers. In this work, microwave characteristics of insertion loss and return loss have been measured between 7.3-12.4 GHz, for aqueous solutions of chromosomal and total DNA and for the corresponding buffer, respectively. Starting with the physics analysis of insertion loss and return loss, we have calculated the relative electric-field attenuation constants and the percentage of the incident microwave power attributed from this data analysis to the absorption in DNA-hydration layer systems. The method used is applicable to calculation of microwave absorption in substances that form hydration layers with water.
