Abstract:  „No straight lines!” – Graphic Novels and the Bodies of Non-Binaries. Focussing on 19th century story of Abel/Herculine Barbin, this text traces the medical misrecognition in reading an intersexed body properly. This fact becomes the starting point for a close reading of non-binary gender representations, depicted in contemporary Graphic Novels. Anatomical diagrams are replaced by the sequential interconnections of words and images, found in Jamie Cortez’ Sexile (2004) and Ins A Kromminga’s Where no Man has Gone Before (2015). The latter negotiates historical accounts of Intersex, while the former is concerned with the reconstruction of a transnational transgender biography.

Keywords: Queer Theory – Graphic Novel – Gender Ambiguity – Non-Binary Genders – Transidentity – History of Intersex – Critique of Representation – Sequential Art.
