Abstract:  From Impossible Heritage to Literary Heritage in Chateaubriand’s Works. All the fiction novels of Chateaubriand seem to offer the same statement: heritage is impossible on earth. Does it mean that the only way to perpetuate the past life to give it to the next generation is absolutely impossible? Not really: it seems that Chateaubriand uses his heroes’ failures as a way to find himself confronting to his own future and destiny. Heroes of his fictions go where he won’t go in his personal literature, crossing the path which leads to his own roots. Autobiographical writing may be the only possible ending to go through this problem: the real heritage is not only the paternal property, it’s literature on its own which delivers the last message of the author in the lines of his master piece, Mémoires d’Outre-Tombe, bending under the heavy weight of memory and remembrance. Finally, family memory is being literature, including the world of his past into his words, standing in front of eternity.

Keywords: memory, remembrance, heritage, autobiographical writing, personal literature, Mémoires d’Outre-Tombe, generation.
