QUE DIRE? / WHAT TO SAY?. Authors: JULIA KNOWLTON DE PREE. |

Abstract: In my brief remarks today I shall explore what I observe to be the central paradox in Rousseau’s 1761 novel Julie, ou La Nouvelle Heloise. The paradox concerns the dilemma of female subjectivity and can be summarized as follows: the authentic self (La Nouvelle Heloise) emerges only in representation (writing) while the living subject (Julie as wife and mother) performs the living death of a false self. As her letters make very clear, Julie truly lives when she puts pen to paper, laying her soul bare in wet dark ink. In the end, the correspondence creates her life. | |||||||
