  Abstract:  Comedia lui Ben Jonson este cunoscută ca fiind cel mai important moment al istoriei teatrului englez renascentist, după retragerea lui Shakespeare. Influenţat de estetica clasicistă, Ben Jonson cultivă aşa numita teorie a umorilor moştenită din medicina antică. Potrivit acestei perspective asupra corpului şi personalităţii umane, fiecare personaj este dominat de o singură pasiune devoratoare care-l şi face exemplar pentru viciul respectiv. Riscul e mare şi doar talentul şi verva de comediograf al lui Ben Jonson vor salva textul de monotonie şi îi vor asigura viabilitate.
