Abstract:  The Valuation of Integralism in Japanese Linguistics. An Outline. The main aim of this paper is to delineate an overall assessment of the significance that can be assigned to Eugenio Coseriu’s work within the realm of Japanese linguistics. We were able to identify two different aspects of this relationship: (a) on the one hand, the pertinence of Japanese as an object of scientific description and explanation within Coseriu’s work, with special emphasis on direct contributions brought by the founder of integral linguistics to the functional explanation of this language; (b) on the other hand, the relevance of integral linguistics in the process of a conceptual (re)construction of linguistic science in Japan. Some further dissociations in each of these areas are also introduced and succintly discussed. In the end, we highlight the principal lines of what we believe to be a necessary conjunction between the integralist framework for understanding language activity, and the investigation of Japanese.
