Abstract:  Corneille`s drama has been translated into Hungarian by count Teleki Ádám, being published in 1773 at the Printing House of the Reformed College to Cluj/Kolozsvár. According to his introduction, the translater aimed to promote Hungarian literature, poorly developed at that time and also to develop the language via the publicity of theatre. The study analyzes the context, in which the drama was translated and published, but also the causes, that played a role in choosing this piece for translation. Corneille`s drama integrates in the system of 18th century thematics, dealing with the relation of society–souvereign, man–woman, politic–private sphere. In the same time, due to a fortunate constellation, it also marks the most prolific and progressive period of the Printing House of the Reformed College to Cluj/Kolozsvár.
