Abstract:  On the valence of the "-bar" adjectives. A comparison with their base verbs. The "-bar" derivation represents one of the most productive means of adjectif forming, revealing morphological and semantic extensions as well as syntactic problems and constituting therefore a central issue in the research and analysis of their valence. An example is the connection with the verbal passive form: "auf der Straße beförderbare Waren"- "Waren, die auf der Straße befördert werden können". The potential agents can be added in different forms (i.e. dative, "von", "für"): "Pilze, die für Menschen ungenie-bar sind"; "Brot, das den Menschen ungenie-bar ist"; "Ein Schrank, der nur von zwei Mennern tragbar ist"; "Ein Problem ist für mich nicht lüsbar/von mir nicht lüsbar"; "Etwas ist mir oder für mich unfassbar"; "Zwei Dinge sind für mich ununterscheidbar und von mir nicht nachprüfbar". The question that needs to be answered hereby relates to the semantic roles of the partners. This paper tries to describe the valence of the "-bar" adjectivs, to make a comparison with the valence of their base forms, primarily verbs (similitudes, differences) and to build up a hypothesis on the description of the valence of this class of adjectives. The comparison relies on the three german dictionaries on the valence of verbs, adjectives and nouns as well as on different theories of valence and shows in the end that although the -bar adjectives can be described with the same means as all adjectives, their syntactic and semantic valence shows many similitudes with the valence of their base forms, the differences being given by their meaning and polysemy.
