The present paper offers a succinct introduction to the language of the law and raises an interrogation as to its simplification. To begin with, a brief comparative study between the common law and civil law legal systems provides a better understanding of some significant aspects concerning law and language. Further on, the article focuses on some of the major characteristics of the legal language, and finally, some reflections on teaching legal English are set forth.
