Abstract:  From Text to Hypertext. The Constructedness of the Novel between Artistic Configuration and Technological Reconfiguration. The meaning of a literary text cannot be transmitted directly by simply following the regular coding-decoding process involved in everyday life communication; its particular nature requires a more complex articulatory procedure, one based on the constructedness of narrative. And now, at the turn of a new century, we might be the witnesses of outstanding transformations in the art of contemporary literary writing. The comparison drawn in this paper between print and electronic literature clearly shows that, in the decades to come, the literary canon will have to take into account the significant interactions of language with programming codes which are likely to transform what ‘reading’ means. However, only the future holds the answer to the question: is ‘the civilisation of the book’ eventually going to be replaced by ‘the civilisation of the hyperbook’?

Keywords: print literature, electronic literature, text, hypertext, hypernovel, hyperfiction.
