  Abstract:  Analysis of a Text: The Role of the Contrastive Topic in a Romanian Tale. This article attempts to investigate the manifestation of contrast within the field of topicality in a 19th century Romanian tale. Contrastive topics which constantly appear throughout this tale represent a marked type of topic which is characterised by phonetic prominence, by the possibility of introducing alternatives and is expressed by special syntactic constructions. Such topics serve a conceptual function providing the access to a referent (that is involved in a particular relationship with another one) and its integration to the discourse space. They contribute to text coherence and to the local colour of the tale, being accompanied by various stylistic devices such as enumerations, similes, repetitions, metaphors.
