  Abstract:  The concept of civil liability needs to be understood globally by referring to its epistemological foundations. To this effect, the author questions the possibility of discovering the meaning and legal definition of civil liability, identifies the doctrinal approaches confining it, analyses civil liability as a legal norm and finally discusses its application in the context of legal modernity and in the Quebec civil law.
