  Article:   PAINTINGS IN THE BRUKENTHAL MUSEUM – BETWEEN JOHANN MICHEL ROTTMAYR AND JOHANN CARL LOTH.

  Abstract:  Paintings in the Brukenthal Museum – between Johann Michel Rottmayr and Johann Carl Loth. Making mention of the fact that between the 7th of May and 31st of October in Salzburg and Laufen in Austria was opened the memorial exhibition of 350 years from the birth of the Austrian painter Johann Michael Rottmayr von Rosenbrunn(1654-1730), where the Brukenthal Museum participated with painting named: THE TRIUMPH OF SCIENCE AND ARTS (oil on canvas 274x180cm., signed and dated in the right low side: Rottmayr V. Rosenbrunn, 1710; inventory number 982), the author makes a an extensive analysis of this painting and the opinions of some specialists about it. Then the author presents some biographical data and a brief characterization of the work of Rottmayr. Afterwards the author makes the analysis and presents the controversies and the discussions caused by other 5 paintings in the Brukenthal Museum, assigned first to Rottmayr, and then being considered as belonging to Johann Carl Loth(Carlotto). Rottmayr was his pupil in Venice. The paintings are MERCUR AND ARGUS (inventory number 980), THE FAILURE TO RECOGNIZE IOV BY HIS WIVE AND FRIENDS (inventory number 981) and three other paintings: THE HEALING OF THE BLIND (inventory number 977), THE RETURN OF THE WASTEFUL SON (inventory number 978) and THE MERCIFUL SAMARITAN (inventory number 979). The opinion of the author is that the last three paintings don’t seem to belong to Carlotto, rather they belong to Rottmayr. But he doesn’t exclude the hypothesis of Erich Hubala that the paintings might belong to the painter Antonio Zanchi. Other two paintings are assigned uncertainly to Rottmayr: BOREAS ELOPING ORINTHYA (inventory number 234) and THE CARRYNG AWAY OF HELEN (inventory number 1058) don’t belong to Rottmayr, they belong to some unknown painters, although they have elements that certifies Rottmayr’s influence.
