Abstract:  Cazania I (Tâlcul Evangheliilor – The Interpretation of the Gospels, in original) was published somewhere in Transylvania between 1567-1568. It outlined the requirements of a maximal program aimed at reforming the Eastern church in the region. The book analyses an impressing array of theological themes. It aims at promoting a different type of Christianity, and a new typology of the Christian man at the same time. If some of aspects, such as the cult of images/icons, the services for the dead, and monachism are rebuffed, one can observe a double dotrinary approach when dealing with other theological themes on the agenda. The most telling is the discussion on the soteriological value of the good deeds. All of these are examples of a search for a via media between Reformation and Orthodoxy.
