Abstract:  The Principality of Transylvania in the Confessional Period. The study analyzes some of the core arguments behind the concept of confessionalization, within the Roman-German Empire and also beyond its borders. Also discussed are the objections raised against this theoretical model that deals with early modern governance and society. In this context, the study examines the response of the Transylvanian state to the issue of religious diversity in the late decades of the 16th century, investigating the extent to which—during the early 17th century, at the time of the Calvinist princes—the rising authority and the influence of the Reformed Church may be seen as a process of confessionalization occurring in Transylvania. The conclusions of the study indicate that the process of a late Reformed confessionalization of Transylvanian society involved a lot more than just the definition of a clear religious identity for the Reformed Church, and that it was driven by more than just political forces. The outcome of the Reformed cooperation between Church and the political authorities, in the early 17th century, presents us with a Transylvanian Calvinist version of the model of early modern confessionalization.
