    STUDIA HISTORIA - Issue no. 1 / 2018

Article:   CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING C. JULIUS AFRICANUS OF TOMIS / ÜBER C. IULIUS AFRICANUS VON TOMIS.

Authors:  LIGIA RUSCU.

  Abstract:
The paper suggests the identification of C. Iulius Africanus, known from inscriptions erected at Tomis in honour of his daughter and son-in law, who belonged to the elites of the city, with the namesake centurion of the legio XI Claudia, attested epigraphically at Montana in Lower Moesia. This identification leads to a discussion of some aspects of social mobility and of the access of outsiders to the elites of a Greek city, as well as of the integration of Roman veterans into them.

Keywords: C. Iulius Africanus, Tomis, elites, Roman army, social mobility.
