Abstract:  In the southern part of the Maramureş Mountains (Eastern Carpathians, north Romania) the three Alpine units of the Median Dacides (MD), i.e. the Bucovinian, Sub-Bucovinian and Infrabucovinian nappes, respectively are cropping out. Each MD nappe consists of prealpine metamorphics and Palaeozoic-Mesozoic sediments. The pre-Alpine rocks are assigned to several metamorphic complexes i.e. the Rebra, Negrişoara, Tulgheş, and Bretila (Săndulescu, 1984), separated in between by predominantly Variscan, rarely Alpine mylonitic shear zones.

Keywords: Eastern Carpathians, Median Dacides, Alpine nappe system, tectonic window, mylonitic zones, tourmaline-biotite geothermometry, phengite geobarometry
