Abstract:  The Jabal Makdarah and Jabal Haylan area is placed in the east of the Yemen capital Sana’a. During ancient times (800 B.C. to 300 A.D.), the area was an important cultural centre of the Sabaean civilisation. Especially the city of Sirwah was of high religious and cultural importance (Brunner, 1989, Gerlach, 2003). Focus of the building stone research is the Almaqah temple (Fig. 1), a central building of the ancient city which was used over several centuries before being covered by sediments. After the excavation organized by the DAI (German Archaeological Institute), the temple will be restored.

Key words: ancient building stones, classification, weathering, Yemen
