  Article:   COLOURED “MARBLES” RECENTLY QUARRIED IN THE PROVINCE OF BERGAMO, ITALY.

  Abstract:  The Province of Bergamo is very well known for its building materials and decorative stones, especially for numerous coloured “marbles” of great aesthetic value, quarried for many centuries and widely used in building of historical palaces and artistic handmade products spread all over the territory (Marchetti, 2003; Paganoni, 1987; Primavori, 2006; Signori, 2002a). Main part of “marbles” are carbonate rocks (limestones and dolomites) which belong to the stratigraphic succession of the Lombardy Basin, outcropping in the Southern Orobic Alps, and defined to the North by the Insubric Line and to the South by the recent alluvial sediments of the Po plain (Jadoul et al., 2002). The lithotype stones used in the town of Bergamo are synthetically described by Vola et al. (2009).
