Article:   INVITED LECTURE: THE IMPORTANCE OF MINERALOGICAL AND PETROPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF NATURAL BUILDING STONES.

Authors:  ROBERT SOBOTT.

Abstract:  The use of natural building stones was and is frequently determined by factors such as availability and aesthetic appearance. The poor state of many historic buildings and monuments testifies to the insufficiency of these criteria for stone selection. Whenever possible a thorough investigation of the mineralogical and petrophysical properties of a building stone should precede the use. Three groups of properties are of utmost importance: the mineralogical composition, the mechanical parameters and - since water is the principal agent of stone decay – the properties related to its uptake, transport, and reaction with mineral phases.

Keywords: building stones, mineralogy, petrophysical properties.
