  Abstract:  The ruins of one of the most imposing fortified churches in Transylvania, unfortunately not very well known, are preserved in the Cârţa village, Sibiu County (southern part of Transylvania, Romania). The former Cistercian Monastery of Cârţa is regarded as one of the oldest and most important early gothic monuments in south-eastern Europe. The Order of Cistercians founded the monastery at the beginning of the XIIIth century.
