Abstract:  The Roşia Montană ore deposit is located in the southern part of the Apuseni Mountains (NW Romania), in the socalled “Metalliferous Mountains”. Due to the abundance of the Au-Ag epithermal ore deposits, this region is also known as the “Golden Quadrilateral” (Ghiţulescu and Socolescu, 1941). It extends on about 900 km2 and represents the richest Au-Ag province of Europe. Cook and Ciobanu (2004) estimated a total gold production of the area from Ancient times to present of about 1500-2000 tones, very similar to other major gold provinces around the world (Goldfarb et al., 2001). According to the up to date reserve calculation made by Gabriel Resources - a Canadian mining company based in Toronto and owning an exploration-exploitation license for the Roşia Montană-Bucium area, about 410 tones of gold and 1840 tones of silver for a cut off grade of 1.3 g/t gold and 6 g/t silver are known today at Roşia Montană (www.gabrielresources.com; Jan. 3, 2009), thus being Europe’s largest Au-Ag ore deposit (Manske et al., 2006).
