Abstract:  The process of setting up a geopark started in 1997, and was clearly stated in 2000 as a result of a LeaderII project among four territories focused on their geological heritage (Frey et al., 2006). UNESCO closely watched and sustained the process and, based on the European experience and results, extended the concept worldwide in 2004 (UNESCO, 2004). This paper presents the process of building a new geo-park on the grounds of interdisciplinary studies, stakeholder identification, and local heritage evaluation. Large support of local communities constitutes a proper framework for national projects dealing with public awareness, cultural events, promotion, and informal education. All these are the ideal ingredients to justify the geopark concept and its capacity to gather around groups and stakeholders from different areas of interest and to create a partnership. Moreover, ideas for projects are to be financed through the EU funds schemes (Grigorescu and Andrăşanu, 2005, 2006).

Key words: geo-park, local identity, sustainable development, partnership, innovation
