Abstract:  In 1999 the American didactic tool GEOLAB© was successfully adapted by the Austrian Geological Society and the Museum of Natural History in Vienna to Austrian relations. It was outlined for schoolchildren aged 12-13 years (secondary schools) according to the Austrian syllabus in Biology and Environmental Sciences. Now it is successfully tested with pupils between 12 and 18 years (Fig. 1). Since 2000 more than 1500 GEOLABs are in use of Austrian schools, some were sold to Germany. Experiences in Germany suggest that the content originally selected for Austrian relationships is equally appropriate for German schools. Tests by teachers of Austrian high-schools and by museum educationalists revealed that GEOLAB© is best used in groups of twos and threes. GEOLAB© offers a first individual contact with natural products, of the ground on which we live and of which we live. The environmental awareness should be encouraged or initiated and last but not least teachers and students should have some fun with geosciences (GEOLAB© is available in German only).

Key words: secondary school, didactic tool, environmental awareness.
