Abstract:   I am very grateful for the invitation to come back to Cluj – because it is not my first visit – and to receive the title of a doctor honoris causa of your noble university. It is a great honour and a privilege to become a member of your academic community. Since my retirement three years ago I am more involved in the world of science than in policy making. But today I would like to share with you some thoughts about the contribution of enlargement policy for peace and stability and prosperity in Europe, based on my experience as the first EU-enlargement commissioner from 1999 to 2004.
