  Abstract:  The paper addresses the issue of (re)construction of civil society in Romanian after 1990, attempting to employ the notion on the “cultural imaginary“ in dealing with some aspects of cultural transition. Viewing modernization and democratization as the leading trends of present-day globalization, the author questions the possibilities of repre¬senting “the local“ in its continuous change while considering modern inter-conditioning of culture and politics.
