Article:   “THE LEAP, NOT THE STEP” PART TWO: COMPARATIVE RECEPTION OF A PRODUCTION OF HEINER MÜLLER’S QUARTETT IN NEW ZEALAND AND EUROPE.

Authors:  BRONWYN TWEDDLE.

  Abstract:

In the first part of this essay, in the previous issue of Studia, I explained how my production of Heiner Müller’s Quartett was created, drawing upon inspiration and concepts from key contemporary theatre practitioners. This second part of the discussion examines the performance of the work, in two aspects – firstly, the contribution of the audience – how their expectations and experiences impact upon the meaning they find in the piece; and secondly, how the physical parameters of venues for the performance affect the audiences ‘reading’ of the work.

Keywords: Quartett, performance, reception, space
