  Abstract:

This paper presents a research/ creation method based on observation as a phenomenological act, which addresses researchers, artists (directors or actors) as well students in theatre studies/ arts. Discovered during a rehearsal for Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, this method was developed to enhance the study of the living experience in the theatrical event, for the researcher, as well for the artist. By suspending any kind of projection, the subject should be able to discover the virtual spectator’s experience. In the creation process, the director becomes his own spectator, the first to experiment the performance. In order to better define the multiple responses to a theatrical performance, this paper also proposes a study of the reception process through the functions of the Implicit Spectator (the director), the Actual Spectator (the real one) and the Explicit Spectator (the critic).

Keywords: theatre, Godot, observation
