Abstract:  The reaction of potassium permanganate with toluene, catalyzed by Mn2+, was studied spectrophotometrically. Permanganate ion is consumed mainly by two reaction routes: one is the direct oxidation of toluene and the other the reduction by the manganous ion. Both pathways exhibit a first - order dependence with respect to permanganate ion. Our kinetic study includes also the influence of toluene, hydrogen ion and manganous ion concentration upon reaction rate. The rate laws for the two reaction routes and for the global reaction were established. Several possible reaction mechanisms are discussed for C – H bond breaking in the case of direct oxidation of toluene by permanganate and for Mn3+ generation by reduction of MnO4- with Mn2+.
