  Abstract:

Using a new approach of dating live angiosperm trees, three wood samples collected from the inner cavity of the very large pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) of Cajvana, Romania, were processed and radiocarbon dated by AMS for determining the age of the tree. The radiocarbon date of the oldest sample was found to be 736 ± 23 BP, which corresponds to a calibrated calendar age of 735 ± 10 years. By considering the original position of this sample in the hollow trunk, one can estimate that the age of the oak is around 810 years.

Keywords: radiocarbon dating, accelerator mass spectrometry, dendro-chronology, pedunculate oak, tree growth.
