Abstract:  Effects of flame composition, the observation height and the spectral bandpass of the monochromator on the emission of Cs in methane-air flame were studied and optimized. The best results were obtained using the 852.19 nm Cs line at the observation height of 11 mm, with the flame composition of 1.12 (relative stoichiometric units) and the slit width of 0.8 mm. The effect of Li, Na, K, Rb, Mg, Ca, Sr, Zn, Al and PO43- on the emission of Cs was studied too. The detection limit of 3 ± 1.4 μg.L-1 was obtained, in the presence of 200 mg.L-1 K, at a significance level of 0.05. The Cs content of mineral and well waters was determined without prior concentration by using both the external calibration and standard addition method. The results of these methods show good agreement implying the use of background correction.
