Abstract:  Phosphatase, catalase, urease, actual and potential dehydrogenase activities were determined in the 0–20 cm layers of the most representative polluted soils from Cluj County: urban roadside soil, industrial polluted soils including metallurgy and refractory products manufacturing sector, soils affected by zootechnical residues, soil contaminated with hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) pesticide residue and soil polluted by uncontrolled dumping of municipal solid waste. In order to have insights about complex microbial processes in habitats, these enzymological researches have been completed with physical and chemical analyses which make possible the appreciation of pollutants influence on the activity of soil microbial communities. The phosphatase, catalase, actual and potential dehydrogenases activities have been studied in eight soil samples; including one unpolluted site (Cheile Turzii protected area). The studied activities were detected in all the 8 zones, with differences noticed only regarding the intensity of the processes. Based on the absolute values of the enzymatic activities, the enzymatic indicators of soil quality (EISQ) were calculated. The EISQ values ranged between 0.032 and 0.3, indicating a low or a moderate intensity of the enzymatic activities. Soil enzyme activities were strongly intercorrelated. Soil enzyme activities were positively correlated with soil organic content and negatively correlated with soil heavy metals concentrations.
