Abstract:  The History of Fir Tree Forests in Romania, as Revealed by the Palynological Method. The present paper is a synthesis, based on numerous palynological studies carried out on Holocene peat sediments especially. Fir tree had no glacial refuges in Romania and it immigrated into the South-West of our country from the Balkan Peninsula. It became dominant in the second period of the Subatlantic age. The fir tree made up a forest substorey (850-1,200 m altitude), together with beech and spruce. In the forests in North Romania fir tree has a more recent subatlantic character than in the other regions of Romania.
