Abstract:  Water quality assessment studies represent an important part of the monitoring programs. According to the new requirements of the European legislation, these ecological studies should focus on biotic communities. In case of lotic ecosystem monitoring, benthic assemblages, both algae and macroinvertebrates, are very accurate indicators of water quality, due to their particular characteristics. Moreover, nekton organisms, mainly fishes, due to their position on top of the river food webs represent a useful tool in characterizing the ecological status of the ecosystems. These are the reasons why we focused on three main biotic communities for the present paper: algae, macroinvertebrates and fishes. This preliminary report presents only qualitative data on these assemblages, in case of algae and macrozoobenthos, and quantitative preliminary data for ichthyofauna. Subsequent researches will establish the water quality for every sampling site considered, by means of biotic indices.
