Abstract:  The present study starts from the ascertained fact that in the last decades a new paradigm of the human has been articulated around the issue of bioethics. From medicine to philosophy and from politics to theology – bioethics is nowadays a presence difficult to overlook. The analysis proposed here takes the case of Eluana Englaro as an example of the way in which the spiritual and the secular/ laic bioethics confronted each other concerning the bioethical dilemmas. Without encouraging the ethical bipolarity, the author reviews the characteristics of the two conceptions and finally pleads for the overcoming of the confrontation by identifying a consensus destined to harmonize, as much as possible, the potential (apparently unlimited) of the present biotechnology with the responsability (apparently anachronical) towards man and nature, that is towards God’s creation.

Keywords: christian bioethics, secular bioethics, Eluana Englaro, orthodox social theology, dialog between theologie and science
