  Abstract:  Multe argumente, deşi nu toate, care privesc legitimarea din punct de vedere moral a eutanasiei tind să arate că este vorba despre o formă de respectare a voinţei pacientului. Se spune, într-adevăr, că aşa cum este respectată voinţa pacientului atunci când decide să refuze tratamentele, aşa trebuie respectată şi voinţa sa atunci când alege că vrea să moară (sau, cum uneori se spune, de a fi ajutat să moară). Înainte de a analiza această analogie, care tinde de altfel să justifice suicidul asistat şi eutanasia, trebuie să reflectăm asupra argumentului în sine: ar fi greşit să concludem, chiar dacă analogia ar funcţiona, că orice sprijin acordat dreptului de refuz al tratamentelor ar fi o recunoaştere implicită şi a dreptului de a cere eutanasia.
